A cap that is placed over a tooth or implant post is called a crown and restores a tooth’s shape, size, strength and improves appearance. Crowns are cemented in place and cover or encases the entire portion of the tooth or implant above the gum line. Crowns are usually recommended to protect weak teeth, restore broken or worn teeth, improve aesthetics, to hold a bridge in place or cover an implant.

There are different types of material used in making a crown including all metal, porcelain fused to metal, all resin or all ceramic.
